About the Artist
The
Story
Marilyn Evans is deeply committed to preserving the art of handweaving, constantly exploring innovative techniques to create stunning and unique pieces. Her artistic dedication and pursuit of excellence define her creative journey, inviting you to discover the enchanting world of art through her captivating creations.
Montana Blue Heron embodies Marilyn Evans' artistic vision, after she became a solo artisan following the loss of her husband and collaborator, Bill Stevens, in early 2022.
With nearly four decades of self-taught weaving experience, Marilyn has evolved her craft from fine beadwork to intricate willow structure weavings, including woven sculptures and three-dimensional wall art. She is a proud member of the Montana Circle of American Masters and has garnered numerous awards at art shows.
In the Spring and Fall, Marilyn collects willow and dogwood wands along a Montana river, which form the foundation of her work for the next six months. The willow acts as the "bones" of each piece, providing essential, strength, and durability.
Marilyn skillfully blends her dyes using a unique recipe honed through years of practice. After extensive preparation, she transforms bundles of willow, rattan, raffia, jute, seagrass, and sisal into the vibrant colors her work is known for, often framed by antler, aspen, or pine.
In late 2021, Marilyn embarked on the exciting of silversmithing, proving there are no limits to her imagination, drive, and creativity.
